1. Discuss Your Song Preferences With Your Partner

You and your partner may have different music tastes. This doesn’t mean you can’t find a song that you both love. Sit down together and make a list of your favorite songs. Discuss the songs’ lyrics, tempo, and melody. Then, try to pick a song that you both admire. If you can’t agree on one song, don’t sweat it – pick two different songs and make a mashup.

2. Personalize Your Song Choice

Look for a song that resonates with both of you as a couple. Choose a song that reflects your shared experiences, common interests, and the story of your relationship. You can also use a song that has sentimental value, like a song that was playing when you first met, a song that reminds you of your first kiss, or a song that you both love listening to. Adding a personal touch to your dance song will make it more memorable and unique.

3. Consider the Mood and Tone

The atmosphere of your wedding venue should match the mood of your first dance song. If you’re having a rustic barnyard wedding, for example, you might want to choose a more laid-back, folksy tune. If you’re getting married in a grand ballroom, something more sophisticated and elegant may be the way to go. Remember that your first dance is not only about showcasing your moves but also about setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

4. Take Dance Lessons

If you’re not a natural dancer, taking dance lessons before your wedding can be a great way to boost your confidence and improve your skills. Most dance studios offer couples’ classes that specialize in teaching the basics of ballroom and Latin dance. Learning a few new moves will not only make your first dance more special but also more enjoyable.

5. Don’t Overthink It

Remember that your first dance is just one part of your wedding day. There’s no need to put too much pressure on yourself to find the perfect song. It’s okay if you don’t have a song that you both love right away. Take your time and keep the communication lines open. You might discover a song that you’re both obsessed with when you least expect it.

Conclusion:

Finding the perfect first dance song can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the help of our tips, you can find a song that speaks to your heart, reflects your relationship, and sets the mood for your big day.

What did we choose?

We went with a fairly unconventional song, "Where We Started" by Thomas Rhett and Katy Perry. This was a song that my husband and I fell in love with the first time we heard it and often danced to it in our house before our wedding. The sound and lyrics meant something to us and our story, and it was so familiar that we could belt it out on the dance floor while we were dancing.

Remember to keep an open mind, have fun, and don’t stress too much about it. When the time comes to take the dance floor with your special someone, the perfect song will be playing, and your love story will begin. So go ahead, shake those tailfeathers, and make that first dance one to remember!
